Rat Lab Equipment Guide: What Each Tool Does & When It Unlocks

Rat Lab equipment guide to each tool family — vest and bite, Security nets and tasers, armour, firearms, science gear — with session unlock windows and September 2026 gamepass prices.

Rat Lab equipment splits into five working families: the Lab Rat personal kit (the +50 HP vest, rated for any role but especially rats, plus the bite), Security control tools (net, baton, taser, mouse traps, turret), protection and sustain gear (armour, medkit, antidote), firearms (pistol, rifles, shotguns, sniper, MG), and science equipment (mutation gun, hazmat suit, syringe, leash). Almost every tool unlocks on a session clock that resets each join — baton and net at roughly 5 minutes, rifles around 22, shotguns and turret near 30, OP Mutations close to 60 — unless a Forever pass skips the wait. Which family you want depends on the job: Security buys control early and lethality late, rats live on vest and bite, and scientists run on the mutation gun and its support tools. Tier grades below come from a community snapshot dated 19 September 2026; prices are mid-September 2026 store data.

Equipment families at a glance

A community tools tier snapshot dated 19 September 2026 grades the signature kit pieces players chase most: bite, net, baton, taser, guns, sniper, mutation gun, hazmat, armour, and traps — with the vest (+50 HP) called out as a survivability pickup even though it is not a weapon. Grades assume you can actually unlock the tool in the current session, and exact letters shift by goal (escape, PvP/lockdown, science). Patches since the 30 July 2026 launch and the mid-September Forever / Mutation Codes pass wave can nudge them.

Lab Rat equipment: vest and bite

Lab Rat play runs on two S-tier personal items plus opportunistic pickups. The vest (+50 HP) is boring, correct, and often decisive — take it before stage-two brawls. Vested rats soak roughly 50 extra HP, which changes peek math against Security guns, and snipers can one-shot rats without a vest, so never peek long sightlines unprotected. Escape routes that force long sightlines are non-vest traps.

The bite is the rat's personal agency tool: peel, revenge, and the best rat answer to greedy scientists and overextended baton swings. Telegraphed bites into dual Security, though, are free deaths. The Stronger Bite gamepass (R$75) is the usual low-risk rat spend — it helps; it does not grant immortality.

Guns sit at only B-tier for rats. They are stolen or opportunistic pickups — rarely your identity, and not worth derailing stage two for a vanity pickup. Escaped rats do come back armed: revenge footage shows a pistol plus combat knife loadout, with rats asking for an AK-47.

Security control and capture tools

Security's package arcs from control to lethality: the early tools capture and contain, the later tools kill.

Tips

Net (S)

The capture starter and highest-leverage Security item for public lobbies. Lead moving targets and follow up — a net without baton or taser follow-through wastes the window.

Baton (A)

The doorway closer. It excels in doors and after crowd control, but is low tier in open sniper lanes where rats kite you.

Taser (A)

The confirm tool after nets — spend it on high-threat rats still holding bite, not on already trapped low-HP targets. It stops stage runners.

Traps / Mouse Trap (A)

Route denial. Force rats onto known lines and place traps on alternates, not only the obvious hallway everyone already watches; they lock flanks and revenge paths.

Shotguns / Turret (~30m)

Anchor sites and punish close returns. Forever Turret / Mouse Trap owners still need room discipline — paid denial without map sense is noise.

Control and durability passes

Stronger Leash (R$99) adds control and leash strength for control-heavy staff; Armored Guard (R$249) is the Security-facing durability pass.

Support and protection gear

Three quiet pieces decide more rounds than any gun: armour, the medkit, and the antidote.

Mistakes to avoid

Problem
Counting on armour while standing in a sniper lane
Fix
Armour is a quiet A-tier pick that buys time against bite rushes and stray gunfire — it stacks with positioning and vest math even if you are not the rat wearing the vest. It does not fix standing in a sniper lane.
Problem
Entering mid-session staff fights with no sustain
Fix
The medkit sits on the ~10-minute unlock tier and covers sustain in staff fights; 'Medkit Unlocked Forever' sells for R$29.
Problem
Fighting mutations without a counter
Fix
The antidote, on the ~15-minute tier, is the counter to mutations. Pre-play item picks commonly grab 'an antidote, a medkit' alongside nets and mouse traps; 'Antidote Unlocked Forever' sells for R$89.

One label is currently inconsistent: unlock tables group Body Armour with the ~10-minute staff-sustain tier, while the Body Armour Forever pass (R$59, 7 September 2026 wave) is described as 'Body armor [RAT TEAM]' and the tier board rates the vest 'Any (esp. Rats).' Check the item's team label in your own session before assuming who it serves — Armored Guard (R$249) is the explicitly Security-facing durability option.

Firearms

Firearms are the mid-session lethality layer. Pistols unlock at ~15 minutes, when firearms enter the building's tempo; rifles at ~22 minutes hold long labs and corridors; shotguns at ~30 minutes anchor sites and punish close returns. On the tier board guns sit at B+/A for Security — a 'hallway answer; map dependent' layer that rises to A on long sightlines and falls on vent-heavy maps. It is a workhorse ranged layer, but friendly fire near mutation experiments can throw science rounds, so call your shots.

The sniper (B tier; R$399 gamepass path or unlock path depending on ownership) is the stage-three and overlook specialist. It one-shots non-vest rats, teaches patience, and becomes useless once its angle is revealed — relocate after the first miss. The MG (R$299) is the heavy gun option. For Lab Rats, guns are never a kit item — they are the stolen, opportunistic pickups covered above.

Science equipment

Scientists carry the lab's strangest inventory, and each piece has one narrow job:

Failure reasons

Problem
Spraying the mutation gun dry
Fix
The scientist's job tool rewards restraint — 'Science identity. Ammo discipline beats spray.' Pair it with Mutation Index colour literacy; Mutation Gun (R$299) and Hazmat Suit (R$249) are the common paid quality-of-life pair.
Problem
Wearing the hazmat suit on a clean lab
Fix
Hazmat (B/A) spikes when hazards or fallout matter — situational S-tier when the lab is hostile, inventory clutter when it is not.
Problem
Going to apply a mutation without a syringe
Fix
Grab a syringe first — it is the workstation tool scientists use to apply mutations ('Grab a syringe. Oh my gosh, I'm mutating him.').
Problem
Trying to release chamber gas without a canister
Fix
Releasing chamber gas requires fetching a gas canister first ('we need to release the gas, bro. Oh, we need a gas canister.').
Problem
Chasing rats on foot instead of leashing them
Fix
Scientists use a leash to drag rats; Stronger Leash (R$99) strengthens that control.
Problem
Assuming the late session stays static
Fix
OP Mutations (~60 minutes) are the late-session layer — both science toys and rat threats can spike.

How timed unlocks affect access

The game's own store description sets the rule: 'Unlock different tools the longer you play - ( ⚠︎ Your time resets every session ⚠︎ )'. Session tool unlocks reset when the session ends unless you own a Forever pass. Community milestones:

Late chaos for science and combat

Treat the minutes as community-facing approximations — patches can nudge them, so re-check them after material game updates. The pattern is consistent: early tools emphasize control (Net, Baton); later tools emphasize lethality (rifles, sniper, shotguns).

Equipment for each role is also sold as gamepasses (mid-September 2026 store prices): Hazmat Suit R$249 (science/hazard survivability), Armored Guard R$249 (Security durability), Mutation Gun R$299 (mutation-focused scientists), MG R$299 (heavy gun option), Sniper R$399 (punishes non-vest rats hard), Stronger Bite R$75 (rat-leaning power), Stronger Leash R$99 (control/leash strength), and All Mutation Codes R$2499 — that last one is Mutation Index convenience, not a redeemable promo list.

Store listings also sell per-tool Forever skips that remove the session wait: Baton R$29, Net R$59, Taser R$59, Medkit R$29, Pistol R$29, Antidote R$89, Rifles R$119, Shotguns R$89, Body Armour R$59 (7 September 2026 wave), Mouse Trap R$149, Turret R$179, and OP Mutations R$299. Guides advise feeling the free curve first — 'Do not spend Robux until you have felt a full free timer curve at least once' — and note that the Hazmat Suit and Mutation Gun are comfort, not requirements.

Choosing equipment by goal under session resets

Because unlocks reset each join, the recommended routine is a fixed order:

Roadmap

  1. 1

    Before spawn

    Decide your goal

    • Pick escape, capture (PvP/lockdown), or science — the session clock makes the plan come first.
  2. 2

    First unlock rush

Rush the S-tier tool for that goal

    • Escape: vest + bite
    • PvP/lockdown: net — 'Without nets, rats win tempo'
    • Science: mutation gun
  3. 3

    Second pick

    Add one survivability piece

    • Vest, armour, or hazmat
  4. 4

    Only then

    Greed sniper or luxury guns

    • Guns rise to A on long sightlines and fall on vent-heavy maps
    • Armour lets you win post-net melees against vested rats
    • Hazmat is situational S-tier when the lab is hostile; inventory clutter when it is not
