Rat Lab Firearms: Unlock Times, Ranges, and Roles
When Rat Lab firearms unlock (Pistol ~15m, Rifles ~22m, Shotguns ~30m), what range each family controls, vest vs non-vest shot math, role access, and ranged gamepass prices.
Rat Lab's firearms arrive on the session clock: the Pistol unlocks at roughly 15 minutes for short-range denial, Rifles at roughly 22 minutes for corridor control, and Shotguns at roughly 30 minutes for close-range anchor defense. The Sniper is the outlier — an R$399 gamepass built for long sightlines that one-shots non-vest rats. The reset rule, vest math, role access, map fit, and store prices below fill in the rest.
Firearms reset every session
Firearms are part of Rat Lab's session-timed tool economy, not permanent kit. The game's official description warns: “Unlock different tools the longer you play - ( ⚠︎ Your time resets every session ⚠︎ )”. Firearms unlock on timers during a match, then drop when the session ends unless you bought Forever unlocks. The rule runs in three steps: play a session and tools unlock on approximate minute marks; leave or end the session and progress on those timers resets; the exception is Forever gamepasses, which keep listed tools available without waiting. In practice, pistol, rifle, and shotgun access has to be re-climbed every join unless a Forever pass covers the weapon.
Firearm unlock timeline
These minutes are community-facing approximations and can be nudged by patches — re-check them after material game updates:
Comparison
| Approx Minute | Firearm Unlock | Combat Job At That Mark |
|---|---|---|
| ~15 | Antidote, Pistol | Firearms tempo begins; Security begins ranged denial |
| ~22 | Rifles | Corridor denial; escape stage three danger; hold long labs and corridors |
| ~30 | Shotguns (unlocking alongside Turret) | Anchor defense; brutal close returns; anchor sites that punish close returns |
The Sniper carries no minute mark on this timeline — it is described as reachable through the R$399 gamepass path “or unlock path depending on ownership.” The Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, Flamethrower, Dart Gun, and Grenades have no minute marks on the standard timeline either.
Pistol
The Pistol is the first firearm on the session clock, unlocking at ~15 minutes alongside the Antidote — the point where firearms enter the building's tempo and Security's table marks the pair as the moment to “Begin ranged denial.” Before that mark, staff guns are softer: the revenge timer reads “Under ~15m | Softer staff guns; revenge is spicy but fair.” Once online, pistols (with rifles) punish straight corridors during outbound escapes and punish lazy re-entry peeks during revenge returns. Pistol Forever costs R$29 if you want to skip the session wait.
Rifles
Rifles unlock at ~22 minutes and define the session's mid-game corridor fight — “Corridor denial; escape stage three danger,” or in Security's phrasing, “Hold long labs and corridors.” From roughly 22–30 minutes, corridors become lethal. The tier list grades Guns “B+ / A” for Security as a “Hallway answer; map dependent” pick and calls them the “Workhorse ranged layer,” with one caveat: friendly fire near mutation experiments can throw science rounds, so call your shots. Rifles Forever costs R$119.
Shotguns
Shotguns unlock at ~30 minutes, arriving alongside the Turret as the session's close-range anchor layer: “Anchor defense; brutal close returns,” or “Anchor sites; punish close returns.” The same ~25–30 minute window is lane-denial time — “Mouse Trap / Shotguns / Turret deny lanes—especially Forever owners.” Shotguns Forever costs R$89. Their arrival also changes what Security should expect from rats: late-session rats with shotguns (or OP mutations) “are a different fight than minute-three runners.”
Sniper
The Sniper is Rat Lab's long-sightline weapon, sold as an R$399 gamepass and graded B for Security as a “Stage-three / overlook specialist.” Its defining rule: a sniper can one-shot non-vest rats, while vest rats still punish careless aim. Handling notes from the tier list: once an angle is revealed it becomes useless — relocate after the first miss; the Sniper is great for stage-three overlooks but poor as your only plan. Security guidance: hold angles where non-vest runners must cross, and never waste sniper timing on a vest rat if a non-vest runner is about to exit stage three. Non-vest rats also still risk sniper one-shots on long revenge returns. Buying advice: buy the Sniper only if you already hit shots and understand vest vs non-vest — it is powerful but device-dependent, so mobile players should check their control setup first.
Vest vs non-vest shot math
Vest state changes firearm math. Vest rats gain about +50 HP, so Security must commit more shots or tools — vest rats soak shots that delete non-vest targets, so commit more ammo or combine control tools. The escape-side rule of thumb: without a vest, treat snipers and coordinated rifle fire as lethal; with a vest, you still die to focused fire — you only buy mistakes. This stays true even for mutated rats: the vest does not stop mattering once you mutate — vest HP and sniper rules still decide gunfights.
How firearm threat escalates with session age
- Under ~15m: softer staff guns; revenge is spicy but fair.
- ~15–22m: pistols and rifles punish lazy re-entry peeks.
- ~25–30m: Mouse Trap, Shotguns, and Turret deny lanes — especially Forever owners.
- ~60m: the OP Mutations layer; expect swingy chaos in chambers.
Pacing context: early session (5–15m) the lab is about control tools and first experiments — the map is not yet full firearm chaos; mid session (22–30m), rifles, traps, shotguns, and turrets redefine space. Mid and late session unlocks (pistols, rifles, traps, turrets, eventually OP mutations) are more likely online as the match ages. Survival advice follows the clock: avoid isolated dead-ends once pistols and rifles are online for staff or returning rats.
Who carries firearms
Firearm access depends on role:
Tips
Security
The primary firearm role — Security is stronger once guns unlock. Early tools emphasize control (Net, Baton); later tools emphasize lethality (rifles, sniper, shotguns).
Scientists
Guns and sniper are graded B — emergency defense, not identity.
Lab Rats
Stolen / opportunistic guns are graded B — rarely your identity; do not derail stage two for a vanity pickup.
Revenge returns
Revenge rats do return armed, and Forever firearms help revenge more than stage-one stealth — buy after you know map routes. Recorded revenge gameplay shows this access in practice: “So, first I got pistol and I got combat” (a rat player entering with a pistol and combat knife).
Choosing range for the map
Map and sightline conditions decide firearm value — common range mistakes and their fixes:
Mistakes to avoid
- Problem
- Routing through long open halls
- Fix
- Prioritize pathing that avoids them — “long open halls where snipers and guns shine.”
- Problem
- Assuming guns are equally strong on every map
- Fix
- Gun tier can “rise to A on long sightlines” and falls if the map is vent-heavy — read the map shape first.
- Problem
- Trusting a doorway that was safe early
- Fix
- Timer literacy is range literacy: the same doorway is “safe” at minute four and “sniper bait” at minute twenty-five.
- Problem
- Treating Security-controlled belts as static
- Fix
- They combine “sightlines, nets, and later rifles/turrets” — expect them to become rifle lanes as the session ages.
- Problem
- Standing still in a chamber during rifle minutes
- Fix
- Strafe while interacting — standing still is “free elo for Security,” and the fast-escape route's fail condition is a “Sniper peek on stage three.”
- Problem
- Pacing objectives without the clock
- Fix
- “Prefer earlier sessions before Rifles (~22m), Mouse Trap, Shotguns/Turret (~30m) lock lanes.”
Ranged weapon gamepass prices
Ranged weapons appear on the in-game store as gamepasses. Prices reflect a captured store listing from September 2026 — re-read the live Roblox purchase modal before buying, since the developer can retune wording or cost.
