Rat Lab How to Play: Roles, Session Loop, and First-Session Steps

How to play Rat Lab: what Lab Rats, Scientists, and Security each try to do, how the escape-and-revenge session loop works, approximate unlock timings, and a step-by-step plan for your first five minutes.

Quick answer

Rat Lab is a free-to-play asymmetric action game on Roblox by Evil Science (released July 30, 2026). Every session puts three roles in one lab with opposed goals — and tool-unlock progress resets when the session ends.

  • Lab Rats: attempt to escape and take revenge, or be tested on.
  • Scientists: create your OWN mutations and test them on lab rats.
  • Security: stop rats from escaping, or capture escaped rats.
  • Simplest first-session path: pick a role, join a session, learn your role UI and nearest landmarks, survive the first five minutes, and finish one short objective.

Session shape: escape, exit, revenge, and the reset rule

A session has a recognizable shape. Lab Rat progress is staged: three stages of movement through the facility followed by a final exit — treat each stage as a checkpoint of map knowledge rather than a single button prompt. Exact room layouts shift with patches, so learn the three-stage structure first and let specific routes come with reps.

Clearing the exit is not necessarily the end of the run: escaped rats can return armed for revenge, an optional loop that means re-entering the lab while Security's routes are alert and its session tools have unlocked.

Underneath everything runs the session clock: tools unlock as playtime accumulates, and progress on those timers resets when you leave or the session ends — unless Forever gamepasses keep listed tools available without waiting. That reset is expected design, not a bug.

Choose a role: Lab Rats, Scientists, or Security

Comparison

Comparison
RoleWhat You Are Trying To DoBeginner Fit
Lab RatsAttempt to escape and take revenge, or be tested on.Teaches the map fastest and carries the main fantasy — break containment, complete the three-stage escape, optionally return for revenge.
ScientistsCreate your OWN mutations and test them on lab rats.Shines if you care about the Mutation Index; you are not the primary capture role — that is Security.
SecurityStop rats from escaping, or capture escaped rats.Stronger once guns unlock — patrol, capture, and shut down revenge runs.

The creator framing of the same three picks: a lab rat tries to escape, fights guards, or role-plays; a scientist tests mutations on rats, discovers new mutations, and uses a leash to drag rats; police keep the laboratory in order and punish bad rats. All three roles are playable in one sitting, and it is worth playing one full session on each before spending Robux.

Your first five minutes

Roadmap

  1. 1

Pick a role and join a session

Get into the lab with the right job.

    • Open Rat Lab from Roblox, then choose Lab Rat, Scientist, or Security.
    • Join a session and identify your role UI and nearest landmarks; learn where the exit path begins.
  2. 2

    Survive the opening minutes

    Read the early capture window.

    • Note when Baton/Net-style tools appear for staff — Security's primary early capture window opens around ~5 minutes.
  3. 3

    Play your role's opening moves

Act on your role's first-session priorities.

    • Lab Rat: spawn and confirm you are actually Lab Rat; scout safe rooms, vents, and stage-one objectives; attempt stage one of the escape path and abort if Security stacks. Creator runs show escapes landing within the first minutes, but commit to stage transitions only when the path is clear enough.
    • Security: practice Net/Baton captures on early rats before guns dominate — play aggressive patrols during the early capture window.
    • Scientist: spawn, locate Index/experiment stations, and note Security density; avoid standing still during alarms.
  4. 4

    Bank early progress

End the opening with something concrete.

    • Finish a short objective — move through containment, open a tool, or survive the first Security wave.

What unlocks when (approximate)

Tool unlocks are per session: play a session and tools unlock on approximate minute marks; leave or end the session and progress on those timers resets — unless Forever gamepasses keep listed tools available without waiting. The official game page confirms only that different tools unlock the longer you play and that your time resets every session; the minute marks below are community approximations that patches can nudge, so treat the table as a planning aid and recheck it after material game updates.

How the session clock changes play

Tips

0–10 minutes (Lab Rats)

The best collective window to clear early stages before gun stability — early sessions favor aggressive stage pushes before rifles.

15–22 minutes

Pistols and rifles punish bad peeks, and vest value rises (community guides document roughly +50 HP on vest rats) — acquire vest value or never peek long sightlines.

25–30+ minutes

Traps and shotguns make greedy revenge travel painful — if the session is this old, expect locked lanes.

~60 minutes

The OP mutation layer changes fights for every role — only commit if you accept swingy fights.

Security's clock

Win early with Net/Baton; do not AFK for a sniper while rats are already on stage two; after minute twenty-five, place denial on return routes, not only on spawn labs.

Scientist's clock

Shorten experiment cycles as firearms come online, and treat minute sixty as a different game if OP mutations are active.

The defining asymmetry

Security's best tools unlock later, so early rats can push stages before staff have guns — and because unlocks reset, the same doorway is safe at minute four and sniper bait at minute twenty-five.

The revenge loop: what happens after a successful exit

After a successful exit, Rat Lab lets you return for revenge with weapons. It is optional content, and it is where many escapes throw their win: re-entering means crossing Security's now-alert routes with session guns unlocked. Revenge without waiting for meaningful weapons wastes the exit advantage, while waiting too long faces top-tier defenses and tired teammates.

Good revenge happens after the stage objective is secure, targets an isolated scientist mid-mutation or a guard caught reloading, and uses bite plus vest buffer rather than naked ego. Bad revenge turns around at the final door for a 1v3 or burns the only escape window in the session.

On the other side of the loop: once an escape is announced or an exit happens, scientists switch to survival mode, and Security rotates to revenge intercept paths immediately.

Common first-session mistakes

Mistakes to avoid

Problem
Rage-quitting when tools vanish on your next join.
Fix
That is expected design, not a bug — tool-unlock timers reset every session.
Problem
Assuming last session's unlocks persisted after rejoining.
Fix
Re-earn unlocks each session; only Forever gamepasses keep listed tools available without waiting.
Problem
Treating mutation codes as promo codes and spamming the redeem UI.
Fix
No working Rat Lab promo codes are confirmed yet, so don't burn session time on redeem attempts.
Problem
Returning for revenge unarmed or without a route plan.
Fix
Revenge is optional and risky — wait for meaningful weapons and plan the route before re-entering.
Problem
Assuming vest and non-vest rats take equal damage.
Fix
Security must adjust shot counts between vest and non-vest targets.
Problem
Standing in open corridors once rifles and snipers unlock.
Fix
Escape routes that force long sightlines are non-vest traps — prefer broken lines of sight even if the path is longer.
Problem
Buying gamepasses before feeling the free timer curve.
Fix
Do not spend Robux until you have felt a full free timer curve at least once.

First-session progress markers: the six badges

Rat Lab tracks progress with a tight badge set that mirrors the three-role fantasy — survive as a subject, break containment, leave the facility, advance science, catalog specimens, and lock down escapees. In practice that is six badges:

  • Test Subject — you entered the experiment life (the onboarding badge; any role, usually early Lab Rat).
  • Through the Wall — containment breach progress (Lab Rats).
  • Out of the Lab — full escape / exit clear (Lab Rats).
  • For Science — experimentation milestone (Scientists).
  • New Specimen — Index / specimen progress (Scientists).
  • Caught One — successful capture (Security).

Badges are milestones, not paywalls — gamepasses can make some conditions easier, but every badge is earnable by learning roles and routes. A first-evening tour: join as Lab Rat for Test Subject and Through the Wall progress, commit a clean exit for Out of the Lab, requeue Scientist to push For Science and New Specimen with Index focus, then requeue Security to farm Caught One in the first fifteen minutes. Chase badges with intent, then return to normal play.
