Rat Lab Session Progression: Unlock Times & Resets
Rat Lab session tools unlock from ~5 to ~60 minutes, then reset when you leave — only Forever passes persist. Unlock ladder, pacing shifts, and planning tips.
Quick answer
Rat Lab's session clock unlocks tools at rough minute marks as you play — Baton and Net near 5 minutes, Medkit/Taser/Body Armour near 10, climbing to OP Mutations near 60. Leave the session and every one of those timed unlocks resets; each join is a fresh climb. Only Forever gamepasses survive the reset, so the equipment you can grab at any moment depends on how old the current session is.
- The official rule: unlock different tools the longer you play — your time resets every session.
- What resets: session tool-unlock timers only. Forever pass ownership stays on your account.
- Why it matters: a tool you used last join must be re-earned with play time this join — or skipped with a Forever pass.
What the session timer unlocks
Tools pop on approximate minute marks as session time accumulates. Treat every time below as a community-facing approximation — patches can nudge them, so recheck after updates. Two gates are corroborated by official pass text: Body Armour's 10-minute wait and OP Mutations' 60-minute wait. There is no in-game countdown to watch for these pops; the practical method is noting each unlock yourself as it happens.
Comparison
| Approx. Session Time | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| ~5 minutes | Baton, Net |
| ~10 minutes | Medkit, Taser, Body Armour |
| ~15 minutes | Antidote, Pistol |
| ~22 minutes | Rifles |
| ~25 minutes | Mouse Trap |
| ~30 minutes | Shotguns, Turret |
| ~60 minutes | OP Mutations |
Not every tool sits on this ladder. Sniper, MG, and Stronger Bite are gamepass items with no known minute mark on the free session timeline — clock time alone won't hand them to you.
What resets when the session ends — and what doesn't
Tool unlocks earned in a session reset when you leave; each join is a fresh climb. If you die or rejoin, rebuild. The most common complaint — tools disappearing after leaving — has a blunt answer: session unlocks reset every join, while Forever gamepasses keep selected tools permanently. Nothing carries over: a revenge god-game last session means nothing if you requeue without Forever skips. Role guidance repeats the same obligation — scientists should expect to re-earn access to advanced science gear during the round, and assuming last session's unlocks survived a rejoin is a listed beginner mistake. Rage-quitting when tools vanish next join is a reaction to expected design, not a bug.
The reset is intentional — it keeps rounds sharp and stops permanent pay-to-stomp from replacing skill. It covers the timed tool-unlock timers only: badges and gamepass ownership are not part of it, and Forever passes exist precisely as the account-level exception that persists across joins. Even then, they are account perks, not a substitute for learning routes.
How pacing changes through the session
Tips
Early session (0–10 min): the pre-firearm window
Staff hold control tools only — Baton and Net from ~5 minutes open Security's primary early capture window, so play aggressive patrols. For rats, this is the best collective chance to clear early stages before gun stability arrives.
Mid session (~15–22 min): firearms tempo
Antidote and Pistol at ~15 minutes, Rifles at ~22. Pistols and rifles punish bad peeks and vest value rises (vest rats ~+50 HP), so escape play shifts from raw speed to line-of-sight discipline. Scientists should shorten experiment cycles as firearms come online.
Late mid-session (~25–30+ min): denial tools
Mouse Trap at ~25 minutes, Shotguns and Turret at ~30. Traps and shotguns make greedy revenge travel painful — if the session is 25–30+ minutes old, expect locked lanes. Security should place denial on return routes, not only on spawn labs.
~60 min: the OP Mutations layer
Treat minute sixty as a different game if OP mutations are active. It is a swingy-fight layer — only commit if you accept the variance — and late OP Mutations change risk for everyone in the chamber.
Read the clock like the map
The same doorway is safe at minute four and sniper bait at minute twenty-five — map literacy is timer literacy. Security's core handicap is timer asymmetry: its best tools unlock later. Early sessions favor aggressive stage pushes before rifles; late sessions favor stealth, vest play, and knowing when to abort.
Late-session clock vs re-entry outlook
The aging clock also prices an armed rat's return after escape — the same map plays far meaner minute by minute, and Forever-owned denial tools bite hardest in the later bands.

Forever unlocks: the exception to the reset
The reset rule has one built-in exception: Forever gamepasses keep their listed tools available without waiting. A Forever pass is an account-level purchase, so the covered tool is available from the first minute of every new session instead of at its timed mark. Store descriptions describe exactly this behavior, with prices as listed in the mid-September 2026 wave:
- Body Armour Forever (R$59) — "Unlock the Body armor [RAT TEAM] permanently. Skip the 10-minute wait in every session, forever."
- OP Mutations Unlocked Forever (R$299) — "Skip the 60-minute wait in every session, forever."
- Mouse Trap Forever (R$149) and Turret Forever (R$179, skipping the ~30-minute Turret wait) — both listed 7 September 2026.
Boundaries: Forever does not invent new win conditions, and the passes are account perks, not a substitute for learning routes. One myth is worth killing outright: OP Mutations do not permanently unlock on your account after one hour of free play — session unlocks reset unless you own the Forever pass.
Pricing and availability churn between waves: some Forever listings already appear offsale in store snapshots while priced versions sit alongside them. Treat the amounts above as dated to that September 2026 wave and check the live in-game store for the current lineup and cost before buying.
Planning a session around the clock
Third-party stats put average playtime near 14 minutes, so a typical short session ends inside the pre-30-minute curve — reaching Shotguns/Turret or the ~60-minute OP Mutations tier means deliberately playing long or owning the Forever skip.
Mistakes to avoid
- Problem
- Spending a 15-minute window chasing endgame tools
- Fix
- Play the minutes you have. Pay Forever to skip waits only after you know what you are skipping — main one role for a week free before buying skips.
- Problem
- Queueing escape or badge runs into sessions that are already old
- Fix
- Prefer earlier sessions before Rifles (~22m), Mouse Trap, and Shotguns/Turret (~30m) lock lanes.
- Problem
- Grinding late-session captures as Security for badges
- Fix
- Traps and turrets help late, but early catches are easier badge farming — take the early captures.
- Problem
- Panic-buying a Forever pass the moment a session ends badly
- Fix
- End the session by noting which Forever unlocks would have saved time — buy later, not panic. Survive a session into ~30 minutes so you feel Shotguns/Turret without Forever.
Three-session drill: learn what your minutes buy
Roadmap
- 1
Session A
Pin down your personal unlock clock
- Note exactly when the 5/10/15-minute tools pop for you
- Write the marks down for reference
- 2
Session B
Win inside the early window
- As a rat, finish an escape before rifles come online
- As Security, max out Net captures
- 3
Session C
Feel the late game before spending
- Deliberately play into 30+ minutes to feel turret/shotgun denial
- Decide whether a Forever skip is worth it
