Rat Lab Experiments Guide: How to Run the Scientist Experiment Loop

Run experiments as a Scientist: claim a workspace, unlock session tools, apply mutations via the syringe workflow, and log Mutation Index colour codes (not promo codes). Results shown are footage-observed examples, not a full catalogue.

Quick answer

The Scientist experiment loop in Rat Lab is mutation creation and subject testing under a session clock: claim a lab workspace, unlock your science tools during the session, apply mutations to Lab Rats via syringe injection, record progress in the Mutation Index, and stay alive long enough to bank it all before Security pressure, escapes, and revenge returns end the round.

  • Spawn and claim a workspace near the Mutation Index and experiment stations
  • Check Index colour meanings so you don't tag allies or rats incorrectly
  • Unlock tools in-session — Mutation Gun first if contested, Hazmat if the wing is toxic
  • Run short experiment cycles while the lab is calm
  • Inject a secured Lab Rat with your chosen mutation colour
  • Log the colour codes you care about — never in the promo redeem box
  • Survive escapes and revenge returns, then note which Forever unlocks would have saved time

Rat Lab's official description gives Scientists one core fantasy: "Create your OWN mutations and test them on lab rats." It comes with a session rule — "Unlock different tools the longer you play" and "Your time resets every session." So the loop is mutation creation and subject testing under a clock: apply mutations, study subjects, and keep the lab productive while staying alive. Scientists are not the primary capture role — that's Security — but they share the facility: you push mutations, manage lab space, and decide whether Lab Rats are test subjects, threats, or temporary allies against a Security sweep. The facility can turn into a warzone the moment Lab Rats finish their three-stage escape and return for revenge. Balance matters: scientists who only chase kills usually lose the lab, and scientists who only hide in a corner never learn Index timings.

The practical experiment loop, step by step

Roadmap

  1. 1

    Spawn and claim a workspace

Set up before the lab heats up

    • Locate the Mutation Index and experiment stations
    • Note Security density and which rooms are still powered or usable after the latest patch
  2. 2

    Check the Index UI

    Avoid mis-tagging

    • Confirm colour meanings before you tag allies or rats incorrectly
  3. 3

    Unlock tools in-session

    • Mutation Gun first if contested
    • Hazmat if the wing is toxic or unstable
  4. 4

    Run short experiment cycles

Until the Net/Baton era passes (~5 minutes into the session)

    • Keep each cycle short so you can reposition as Security's early catches begin
  5. 5

    Respect Security lanes

    • Call positions
    • Don't steal net kills if you still need a living subject
  6. 6

    Read the mid-session breach

    • Track pistol timing as firearms enter the lab's tempo
    • If Lab Rats are mid three-stage escape, move labs and decide contain vs ignore based on your objective timer
  7. 7

Log the colour codes you care about

    • Record your codes personally
    • Never paste them into promo redeem
  8. 8

End the session in survival mode

    • After any escape announcement or exit, prioritize staying alive
    • Note which Forever unlocks would have saved time

Overriding principle: extract value before death — a dead scientist with zero Index progress wasted the join.

Preparing an experiment: workspace, tools, and survivability

Prep requirement one is space and time: secure lab rooms long enough to finish an experiment window. Because session tool unlocks reset each join, expect to re-earn access to advanced science gear during the round.

The science-focused tool priority: the Mutation Gun (S/A) is the job tool — "Science identity. Ammo discipline beats spray. Pair with Index colour literacy." Hazmat sits at A when wings are unsafe and B otherwise. Armour is A against bite rushes. Guns and the sniper are emergency defense only (B), not your identity.

Gamepass context: Mutation Gun (R$299) and Hazmat Suit (R$249) are the common paid quality-of-life pair — comfort, not requirements. Buy them only after you understand the free session timers.

Reading the session clock: when experiments are safe

Tool unlocks are session-based and reset each join unless Forever gamepasses apply. Experiment risk tracks that clock:

Comparison

Comparison
Approx MinuteUnlocksWhat It Means For Experiment Work
~5mBaton/NetSecurity can start reliable catches; run short experiment cycles until the Net/Baton era passes.
~10mMedkit, Taser, Body ArmourMid control and sustain for staff.
~15mAntidote, PistolFirearms enter the lab's tempo — shorten experiment cycles as firearms come online.
~22mRiflesCorridor denial; standing still in a chamber during rifle minutes is free elo for Security.
~25mMouse TrapFlank locks and revenge path control.
~30mShotguns, TurretAnchor defense and brutal close returns; mutating in open labs is asking Security or revenge rats to delete you.
~60mOP MutationsTreat minute sixty as a different game if OP mutations are active — both science toys and rat threats can spike.

These minutes are community-facing approximations that patches can nudge — recheck them after game updates before trusting old timings.

Applying a mutation to a Lab Rat (observed workflow)

As shown in recorded gameplay, the injection workflow runs like this:

Mechanic flow

  1. 1

    Secure a subject

Contain a Lab Rat you can inject

    • Lure a Lab Rat into a chamber or cell
    • Or use a leash to drag rats — restraining is reported difficult on mobile ('I just can't restrain him on mobile')
  2. 2

Pick the mutation and its colour

    • Decide the outcome before you prepare ('What color do we want it?')
  3. 3

    Inject

    • Grab a syringe
    • Open the chamber door
    • Inject
  4. 4

    Observe the outcome

    • Watch the result — one injected rat immediately turned explosive
  5. 5

    Handle failures and hazards

    • The filmed Scientist incinerates subjects when experiments go wrong ('If it goes wrong, I'll just incinerate you')
    • Releasing gas in the lab requires a gas canister

Observed experiment results (a sample, not a catalogue)

Treat every result below as footage-sampled, not a deterministic or complete catalogue. Community guidance is explicit on this: don't invent a full Mutation Index colour list or a full colour bible — use what you observe live in your own sessions.

Tips

Explosive

An injected rat immediately turned explosive in footage.

Invisibility

Shown in recorded gameplay.

Blindness

One Scientist removed a subject's eyes: 'I just got rid of his eyes. I made him blind.'

Bulletproof gums

Observed in footage, described as 'cannot damage you'.

More filmed results

Clown, vampire, wireframe, reversed/inversed controls ('Everything's reversed.'), and spontaneous combustion ('Supernova') also appear in footage.

Colour and specimen names

Shadow Tail, Camouflage, and Flower appeared as mutation/colour names while picking colours; community callouts name specimens like Verity and Dwarfism (the Tiny Verity combo).

Recording progress in the Mutation Index (and the promo-code mix-up)

  1. Open the Index before long experiment chains so you know your target mutation.
  2. Confirm colour meanings before you tag. Index colour codes describe mutation states, experiment tags, or UI markers inside the science loop — they are not redeemable promo codes. Typing a colour name into a promo/Codes box will not gift Robux, Forever passes, or cosmetics.
  3. Log the colour codes you care about in a personal note if you're collecting — still not promo codes.
  4. Treat the All Mutation Codes gamepass (R$2499) as Index convenience for completionists only. It accelerates Index access and is not a promo-code pack; compare Mutation Gun (R$299) and Hazmat Suit (R$249).
  5. Re-check Updates when Evil Science patches mutation behavior.

The mindset: scientists should live in the Index — redeem UI spam wastes time. No Rat Lab promo codes are confirmed as of September 2026.

Running experiments around Security

Mistakes to avoid

Problem
Staying silent about rat sightings
Fix
Call sightings early during stage one–two escapes — Security wants captures and badges like Caught One, while you want uninterrupted experiment time.
Problem
Blocking chase lanes or stealing net kills
Fix
Keep idle experiments out of chase lanes, and don't steal Security's net kills if you still need a living subject.
Problem
Firing near mutation experiments without warning
Fix
Friendly fire near mutation experiments can throw science rounds — call your shots.
Problem
Letting Security delete your subject mid-scan
Fix
For New Specimen-style progress, coordinate so Security isn't deleting your subject mid-scan; call peels or pick quieter minutes.
Problem
Ignoring vest rats and sniper lines
Fix
Respect vest rats (+50 HP) and sniper rules — Security may need space to aim, and a sniper one-shots non-vest rats.
Problem
Treating empty halls as safe
Fix
If Security is absent, play like a survivor-scientist: shorter experiment windows, stay near exits you can abandon, and zero faith in empty halls after minute twenty.

Escaped rats, stage-three decisions, and the revenge loop

Rats who cleared the exit may return with weapons — the scientist nightmare scenario. Assume returning rats know common lab interiors. Relocate after loud gunfire, don't finish a mutation cast in the same spot, and let Security take first contact when it exists. Session resets matter here: dying on a greed Index unlock is worse than banking progress you already secured.

While a rat is mid three-stage escape, decide contain vs ignore based on your objective timer. If a rat is clearly finishing stage three, decide whether your experiment still needs them alive.

Rats deliberately target an isolated scientist mid-mutation, so in mutation chambers keep an exit vector — the chamber that farms Index progress can become a revenge killbox. Strafe while interacting; standing still during rifle minutes is free kills for Security. Server escape signals raise the risk: when escape badges like Through the Wall or Out of the Lab pop, expect your Index session to be interrupted by revenge.

Badges the experiment loop advances

The loop advances two scientist badges. For Science is the scientist milestone for running the lab's experiment fantasy — mutations, tools, and surviving long enough to complete science goals. Watch the session clock: late OP Mutations (~60m) change risk for everyone in the chamber, and the Hazmat and Mutation Gun gamepasses are comfort, not requirements.

New Specimen tracks specimen/Index progress — cataloguing or advancing a new entry rather than only blasting tools. Play methodical science rounds instead of pure PvP and keep notes on which chambers you used. Shared markers like Test Subject also touch the loop, and badge UIs can rename flavor text after patches — re-check updates if an icon looks new.
