Rat Lab Lab Rats Guide: Escape, Survive, and Take Revenge

Win as a Lab Rat: clear the three-stage escape before the ~5-minute Net/Baton window, survive snipers with the Vest and Bite, and judge when a revenge return is worth it — with session timing, priorities, and a beginner checklist.

Quick answer

Lab Rats win by clearing the three-stage escape through the facility to the exit. The official role description sets the job — attempt to escape and take revenge, or be tested on — and revenge is an optional second loop afterward, never a required clear condition.

  • Main threats: Security nets, tasers, and snipers, plus scientist mutation guns that change your effective HP and options.
  • First priority: leave containment before the ~5-minute Net/Baton window matures, learning spawn exits, early cameras, and the first Security choke on the way.
  • Second priority: take the Vest (+50 HP) before stage-two brawls, and never peek long sightlines without it — snipers one-shot non-vest rats.

Lab Rat role overview

Lab Rats are the experiment that refuses to stay caged. The win condition is the three-stage escape; clearing it lets you return for revenge if you choose. The role is also the fastest way to learn the facility layout. On the roles tier list, Lab Rats often rank high for fun and escape goals, mid for pure PvP into geared Security. There are no verified scripts worth the ban risk — the map is designed around fair movement, vision, and tool timing, not AFK-ing in a vent.

Session reset rule and the per-join routine

Tool unlocks earned in a session reset when you leave — your time resets every session. Yesterday's late-game rat toys will not be waiting in your hotbar; each join is a fresh climb. The reset is intentional: it keeps rounds sharp and stops permanent pay-to-stomp from replacing skill. Forever passes are account perks, not a substitute for learning routes.

Reading the clock: 0–10 minutes is the best collective chance to clear early stages before gun stability. From 15–22 minutes, pistols and rifles punish bad peeks and vest value rises (vest rats gain about +50 HP). From 25–30 minutes on, traps and shotguns make greedy revenge travel painful, and the ~60-minute OP mutation layer only pays if you accept swingy fights. These unlock times are community-facing approximations; patches can nudge them, so verify after game updates.

Early escape priorities and why early runs die

Stage one is an information job, not a loot tour: leave the first holding pattern, learn spawn exits, early cameras, and the first Security choke, and identify which corridors are watched, where Scientists cluster, and whether a vest or early bite unlock is nearby. Do not greed a revenge fight here unless the Security player is alone and mispositioned. Move before the ~5-minute Net/Baton window matures — early Security only needs Net/Baton to end a greedy loot tour.

Stage two — mid-lab navigation — is where most runs die: traps, nets, and mutation colour chaos stack, so prioritize pathing that avoids long open halls where snipers and guns shine. Expect the endgame to be hardest, with batons, tasers, and last-door camps. Known early pain points for the role: getting netted or tased before stage two, underestimating vestless vulnerability to snipers, and dying on the revenge travel back into the lab.

Survivability: vest math and movement discipline

The Vest (+50 HP) is the boring, correct survivability pickup — take it before stage-two brawls and time the pickup before contested mid-lab fights. Vest math changes peek decisions: without a vest, treat snipers and coordinated rifle fire as lethal; with a vest, you still die to focused fire — the vest only buys mistakes. A sniper can one-shot non-vest rats, so acquire vest value or never peek long sightlines. Escape routes that force long sightlines are non-vest traps — prefer broken line of sight even if the path is longer.

The math holds from the other side too: vest rats soak shots that delete non-vest targets, forcing staff to commit more ammo or combine control tools. Body Armour is explicitly rat-team protective gear, arriving around the ~10-minute mark or permanently via the Body Armour Forever pass. Vest rules still matter even after mutations — vest HP and sniper rules still decide gunfights. Opportunistic armour or hazmat interactions exist when lab gear is contestable; only greed them if it does not cost the escape timer.

Using Bite for space, peel, and pressure

Bite is the Lab Rat's S-tier personal agency tool, listed for peel, revenge, and scientist punish. It is the best rat answer to greedy scientists and overextended baton swings — but telegraphed bites into dual Security are free deaths. The tier stays S because escape games need a personal agency tool, and the escape-focused S combo is Vest and Bite together: survive the hit, create the peel, finish stages. Biting is a real, usable threat in live sessions. The Stronger Bite gamepass (R$75) helps but does not grant immortality, and it is the usual low-risk rat spend.

Hide versus push: commitment and abort decisions

Push when the path is clear; hide or reset when it is not. Commit to stage transitions only when the path is clear enough. Because unlocks reset every session, early sessions favor aggressive stage pushes before rifles, while late sessions favor stealth, vest play, and knowing when to abort. Hard map rule: never AFK outside the security room door "for content" — that doorway exists to farm rats.

Pathing by party: solo rats take shorter routes with more resets and abort revenge unless lanes are clear; duo rats split, with one distracting near security belts while the other commits the exit; for badge runs, one rat draws Security while another commits the exit route, and never all peek the same sniper hall. Before entering side spaces, decide whether you are looting, hiding, or staging revenge. Mid-run discipline: finish the objective, and do not turn around for a highlight kill unless the exit is already secure. The same judgment in its simplest form: be calm in the room, or fight when they are not looking.

After escape: stay out or return for revenge

The escape objective completes at the exit. Everything after that is optional content — a second mini-game with new rules.

Tips

Revenge is optional

The escape itself is the win condition. Revenge is a second loop where Security already knows rats can leave, and mid/late session unlocks are more likely online.

Good revenge

Happens after a stage objective is secure, targets an isolated scientist mid-mutation or a guard reloading a bad chase, and uses bite plus vest buffer — not naked ego.

Bad revenge

Turning around at the final door for a 1v3, ignoring Mutation Index debuffs you do not understand, or burning the only escape window in the session.

Timing is the swing factor

Revenge without waiting for meaningful weapons wastes the exit advantage; waiting too long faces OP-tier defenses and tired teammates.

Re-entry discipline

Do not re-enter empty-handed unless you are bait for a friend with guns. Never use the same door you exited if Security is camping the obvious mouth, and break line of sight immediately — revenge fails in the first three seconds of a sniper hall more often than in fair duels.

Know when to stay out

Solo revenge into a stacked Security team after minute thirty is how highlight clips of you getting deleted are born.

Badge hunting first

If the goal is only the Out of the Lab or Through the Wall badges, bank the badge first and queue revenge as a separate objective.

How Security and Scientists counter Lab Rats

Mistakes to avoid

Problem
You tunnel on loot while Net and Baton are freshly unlocked (~5m)
Fix
Being netted loses time and positioning — leave containment before a Net/Baton stack forms on the door.
Problem
A taser breaks your momentum between stages mid-session
Fix
Path through cover instead of crossing open ground.
Problem
Pistols and rifles punish straight corridors in mid–late sessions
Fix
Avoid long open halls and favor broken line of sight, even when the path is longer.
Problem
The session is 25–30+ minutes old
Fix
Expect Mouse Traps, turrets, and shotguns to lock lanes — treat those lanes as denial zones.
Problem
You peek a sniper angle without a vest
Fix
Security saves sniper timing for non-vest runners about to exit stage three — get vest value or never peek long sightlines.
Problem
You treat scientists as safe NPCs
Fix
The mutation gun and Mutation Index colours change your effective HP and options; mutation play and experiments can still ruin a quiet flank.
Problem
You reuse your exit route after escaping
Fix
Escaped rats come back with intent and weapons, so Security flips to entrance denial — expect guarded return paths.

Live sessions show the capture fantasy in action: rats leashed and dragged while resisting capture, and scientists stabbing back mid-chase.

Being tested on: mutations as obstacle and opportunity

Being tested on is the other half of the role description. Mutations cut both ways for Lab Rats — they can be obstacle or opportunity depending on patch behavior and who holds OP access. Do not let Mutation Index farming distract from stage objectives if the goal is Out of the Lab. Players encounter a range of rat-side effects mid-run: extra eyes and warts, explosive, vampire, and defensive effects like bulletproof gums, along with scientists injecting rats mid-chase. These effects are session experiences, not permanent unlocks.

Equipment and gamepass priorities for the Lab Rat playstyle

Escape-focused tool priority: S — Vest and Bite, to survive the hit, create the peel, and finish stages. A — Armour (if contestable), plus mobility knowledge against traps, because knowing trap lines is as valuable as holding a trap item. B — stolen or opportunistic guns, which are rarely your identity. Build the loadout under session resets by deciding the goal before spawn, rushing the S-tier tool for that goal first, then adding one survivability piece (vest, armour, or hazmat), and only then greeding sniper or luxury guns.

Failure reasons

Problem
Spending before playing
Fix
Try a clean escape and one revenge return free before buying anything.
Problem
Choosing a first paid item
Fix
Stronger Bite (R$75) is the usual low-risk rat spend — it helps, but it does not grant immortality.
Problem
Buying Forever firearms before learning the map
Fix
Forever firearms help revenge more than stage-one stealth — buy after you know the map routes.
Problem
Dying mid-map without armour every session
Fix
Body Armour Forever (R$59) is the budget Forever pickup — it skips the ~10-minute wait in every session.
Problem
Derailing stage two for a vanity gun pickup
Fix
Stolen and opportunistic guns are rarely your identity — finish the stage first.
Problem
Expecting paid shortcuts to change the rules
Fix
Vest rats still get about +50 HP, and snipers still one-shot non-vest rats.

Beginner Lab Rat checklist

Mechanic flow

  1. 1

    Finish Getting Started once

Learn the base controls and round flow

    • Complete the getting-started flow a single time
  2. 2

    Run one clean escape

Learn the objective without side quests

    • Attempt a full escape with no revenge side quests
  3. 3

    Practice vest timing

    Make survivability automatic

    • Repeat the vest pickup until the timing is automatic
  4. 4

    Learn three failed routes

    Recognize dead ends faster

    • Note why each route failed so the next join is quicker
  5. 5

    Recheck after patches

Stay current with the live game

    • After game updates, check for route-breaking changes before reusing old routes

Revenge is a decision made after the escape, never before it: bank the exit first, then judge whether the session clock, your gear, and the lanes justify the trip back inside. After any material game update, recheck role, item, route, and system behavior before trusting old timings — unlock clocks and counters can shift between sessions.
