Rat Lab Map Guide: Zones, Routes, and What Each Area Is For
Read the Rat Lab map by zones — containment start, interior lab floor, science chambers, security belts and room, exit fringe, Secret Base, and revenge return paths — with tool-timer risk and practiced route cards per objective.
Quick answer
Read the Rat Lab map as connected zones, not a single hallway: containment / subject start, the interior lab floor, science chambers, security-controlled belts, the security room, the exit fringe, revenge return paths, plus the community-callout Secret Base pocket. A standard run flows from the containment breakout across the lab floor, optionally through the chambers, into the exit fringe — and then optionally back through return paths for revenge. Zone danger runs on the session tool clock, so the same doorway that is safe at minute four can be denial-covered by minute twenty-five.
- Containment / subject start: where Lab Rats spawn; stage one is breaking the holding pattern and reading early cameras.
- Interior lab floor: the widest zone — vest timing and broken sightlines decide whether a monitored junction is crossable.
- Science chambers: For Science / New Specimen progress; keep an exit vector at all times.
- Security belts and security room: the map's sightline and denial layer, plus the staff home base and rotate point.
- Exit fringe: stage-three commitment; clearing it lines up badges such as Through the Wall and Out of the Lab.
- Secret Base: a high-value side pocket found via a landmark triad — not a mandatory stop.
- Return paths: revenge re-entry lanes Security should pre-trap once the first rat is out.
Read the lab as zones, not one hallway
Rat Lab's floor plan matters as much as its timers. The facility is a layered laboratory: containment for subjects, science floors for experiments, security choke points for captures, and exit geometry that turns a good run into Out of the Lab. Thinking in zones beats the single-hallway myth — the six-zone reading above is how experienced players describe the same building.
Map literacy is timer literacy. Because session unlocks reset, the same doorway is 'safe' at minute four and 'sniper bait' at minute twenty-five. Geometry is not frozen either: exact layout shifts with updates — including the 19 September 2026 place push, which shipped with limited public notes — so walk your route once after a patch before trusting old muscle memory. Escaping is staged zone and timer literacy, not a single hidden door.
The session tool timer changes zone risk
Zone danger runs on the session clock. Approximate mid-session milestones many players use: Baton/Net ~5m, Medkit/Taser/Body Armour ~10m, Antidote/Pistol ~15m, Rifles ~22m, Mouse Trap ~25m, Shotguns/Turret ~30m, OP Mutations ~60m. Every match resets most tool unlocks unless you own Forever gamepasses, so the same lane changes character as the clock ages. Mouse Trap, Turret, and Shotguns are late denial tools — in a session 25–30+ minutes old, rats should expect locked lanes.
Containment / subject start: breaking out (stage one)
Containment is where Lab Rats begin the fantasy and where Test Subject energy lives. Stage one is breaking immediate containment: leave the first holding pattern, learn which cameras and door swings face your spawn, and favor walls and short corners over open lobbies — early Security only needs Net/Baton (~5m) to end a greedy loot tour. Scout safe rooms, vents, and stage-one objectives. The stage-one job is information: learn spawn exits, early cameras, and the first Security choke, note which corridors are watched and where Scientists cluster, and check whether a vest or early bite unlock is nearby.
Interior lab floor: crossing the living lab (stage two)
The interior lab floor is the widest part of the layout: science traffic, armour timing (10m Body Armour tools), and Taser stops. Vest pickup value (+50 HP) often decides whether you can cross a monitored junction — vest rats force Security to commit more shots or tools. Without a vest, routes that force long sightlines are traps: pistols and rifles punish straight corridors, so prefer broken line-of-sight even if the path is longer. And do not confuse busy science props with the exit — chambers are progress only if your route plan says so.
Science / mutation chambers
Chambers are where Scientists push For Science / New Specimen progress — mutation work and specimen handling, with odd silhouettes like Verity and Dwarfism / Tiny Verity called out in community video. Those sightings are not a complete Mutation Index colour list, and All Mutation Codes (R$2499) does not redraw walls: it is Index convenience, not a promo-code door unlock. The core map habit is keeping an exit vector, because the chamber that farms Index progress can become a revenge killbox. Scientists should strafe while interacting — standing still in a chamber during rifle minutes is free elo for Security. During revenge minutes, scientists in chambers are collateral: if Index farming, leave a rotate vector and do not AFK on Verity / Dwarfism sightings while alarms scream.
Security-controlled belts: sightlines, traps, and weapon geometry
Security-controlled belts are the map's sightline and denial layer, and tool value follows geometry. Traps force rats onto known lines and belong on alternates, not only the obvious hallway everyone already watches. The baton excels in doors and after CC but is low tier in open sniper lanes where rats kite you. Guns rise to A on long sightlines and fall if the map is vent-heavy. The sniper suits stage-three overlooks but is poor as your only plan.
Security room
The security room is staff home base: tool storage, rotate point, and the place rats should not sightseeing-tour without a plan. Security habits: know which hotbar tools unlocked this session before each sortie; run sorties that cover stage-two junctions first, then the exit fringe as the clock ages; and hold angles that see return paths once rats start escaping — Caught One often happens on re-entries, not only on spawn breaks. Forever Turret / Mouse Trap owners still need room discipline, because paid denial without map sense is noise. Keep a body near the security room so revenge squads cannot steal the anchor for free. Rats: never AFK outside the security room door 'for content' — that doorway exists to farm you.
Exit area: stage-three commitment and exit timing
The exit fringe is stage-three commitment into the breakout, and Security plays the endgame hardest here — expect batons, tasers, and last-door camps, with the sniper as a stage-three overlook specialist rather than a whole strategy. Clearing stage three and the exit earns the breakout fantasy and lines up badges such as Through the Wall and Out of the Lab. Timing is the skill: a fast escape runs stages one→three with minimal chamber tourism and fails to a sniper peek on stage three, while the Out of the Lab badge wants exit-fringe timing before the 22–30m tools window and fails to revenge greed before the badge pops.
Secret Base: high-value side pocket
Community callouts refer to a secret base pocket — treat it as a high-value side space, not a mandatory checkbox. Learn one landmark triad (prop + lighting + adjacent hall) so you can find it again after a patch, and decide before entering whether you are looting, hiding, or staging revenge. Secret does not mean empty: late-session Security clears favorites first. On mobile, secret interiors amplify camera drag, so check your controls before forcing a clutch hide. If a clip disagrees with your live build, trust the live build.
Revenge return paths
Return paths are revenge re-entry lanes that Security should pre-trap. After the exit, the optional revenge loop sends you back through alerted space with better staff tools online — a different map problem than the outbound escape. Rats pick the re-entry on purpose: never use the same door you exited if Security is camping the obvious mouth, and treat re-entering the exact camera Security watched you leave through as a listed mistake. Security answers on the map: when the first rat exits, rotate one player to return paths instead of celebrating in spawn, seed Mouse Trap / Turret denial on the mouth you would use if you were the rat, and do not tunnel chase into unknown vents alone.
Route cards worth practicing
Practice one route card per objective so navigation becomes automatic:
Comparison
| Goal | Map Focus | Fail Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Fast escape | Stages one→three with minimal chamber tourism | Sniper peek on stage three |
| Badge Through the Wall | Early breach pathing | Net stack at first door |
| Badge Out of the Lab | Exit fringe timing before 22–30m tools | Revenge greed before badge pops |
| Caught One farm | Security room → stage-two doors | Chasing rats into unknown vents alone |
| Science night | Chambers with safe rotate to cover | Ignoring alarms while Index browsing |
Party and solo pathing across the lab
Group size changes how you split the zones:
Tips
Solo rats
Shorter routes, more resets, abort revenge unless lanes are clear.
Duo rats
One distracts near security belts; one commits to the exit.
Security trio
One anchors the security room, one sweeps chambers, one watches return paths.
Scientists
Call out when a chamber is hot so rats do not treat you as neutral scenery.
