Rat Lab Roles: What Each Role Does and Which to Play First

Compare Rat Lab's three roles — Lab Rats, Scientists, and Security: each role's objective, difficulty, session unlock timings, badges, and which one to start with.

Rat Lab (Roblox, developer Evil Science) has three playable roles with opposite jobs. Lab Rats 🐁 attempt to escape and take revenge — or get tested on. Scientists 🔬 create their own mutations and test them on lab rats. Security 👮 stops rats from escaping or captures escaped rats. One official rule shapes all three: "Unlock different tools the longer you play - ( ⚠︎ Your time resets every session ⚠︎ )" — so every role re-climbs its power curve each join.

Lab Rats — escape, then optional revenge

Lab Rats are the escape fantasy: you are the experiment that refuses to stay caged. The job is a three-stage escape through the facility plus a final exit — stage one breaks immediate containment, stage two crosses the lab interior (where most runs die to traps, nets, and mutation colour chaos), and stage three plus the exit completes the breakout. Revenge after a successful exit is optional, and good revenge only happens after the stage objective is secure: target isolated scientists or reloading guards, and never burn the escape window on a final-door 1v3.

Core habits: scout safe rooms, vents, and stage-one objectives; unlock bite and mobility tools; and time the vest pickup before contested mid-lab fights. Community combat notes put the vest at roughly +50 HP and report that a sniper can one-shot non-vest rats — so never peek long sightlines without it. On the community tools tier list, Bite is the role's S-tier personal agency tool ("Peel, revenge, scientist punish"), and the vest is S-tier for any role, especially rats. Documented early pain points: getting netted or tased before stage two, underestimating vestless vulnerability to snipers, and dying on the revenge trip back into the lab. Because tool unlocks reset every session, each join is a fresh climb.

Scientists — mutations and experiments

Scientists create mutations and run experiments, treating the facility as a workplace that turns into a warzone the moment escaped Lab Rats return for revenge. Typical goals: advance Mutation Index work with correctly applied colour-coded statuses, hold lab rooms long enough to finish an experiment window, deny (or deliberately ignore) rat stage transitions depending on the objective timer, and stay alive through Security crossfire and rat bites. You are not the primary capture role — that is Security — but you share the facility and die to the same revenge weapons.

Signature kit: the mutation gun is the job tool, hazmat matters when wings are toxic or unstable, and armour buys time against bite rushes. One distinction worth repeating: Mutation Index colour codes track mutations — they are not redeemable promo codes. When Security is absent, the documented adjustment is to play like a survivor-scientist: shorter experiment windows, stay near exits you can abandon, and zero faith in empty halls after minute twenty. Community tier notes put Scientists high for science goals and mid for pure escape-style fun.

Security — capture and revenge denial

Security captures escaped Lab Rats, protects the facility, and shuts down the optional revenge return after a three-stage escape; captures feed progress toward badges like Caught One. This is not a pure deathmatch class — early tools emphasize control (Net, Baton from around 5 minutes) and later tools emphasize lethality (rifles around 22 minutes, sniper, then shotguns and turret around 30 minutes).

Rats feel slippery for three documented reasons. First, timer asymmetry: Security's best tools unlock later, so early rats can push stages before you have guns. Second, vest rats soak roughly +50 HP worth of shots that delete non-vest targets, so commit more ammo or combine control tools. Third, revenge travel: escaped rats come back armed, so your mid-map habits must flip to entrance denial. A sniper one-shots non-vest rats, so hold true sightlines where non-vest runners must cross. The patrol structure mirrors the escape stages: flood early Net/Baton presence at stage one, cover transitions at stage two, play denial rather than random room clears at stage three and the exit, and rotate to revenge intercept paths immediately after any exit.

How the Rat Lab roles interact

Rats vs Security: Security's job is to stop runners — nets and tasers delete rat momentum, and snipers punish peeks. Rats vs Scientists: scientists are not safe NPCs — mutation gun fire and Index colour statuses change a rat's effective HP and options, while rats bring bite and vest buffers (~+50 HP), so a tagging scientist should never stand still and should use doors, elevation, and Security help. Scientists vs Security: the two roles share anti-breach incentives but compete for space — scientists should call rat sightings early, avoid blocking chase lanes with idle experiments, and respect sniper sightlines, because Security wants captures (Caught One) while scientists want uninterrupted experiment time; Security is likewise told to coordinate so experiments do not block chase lanes. Mutation hotspots work as vision traps for Security, whose job remains captures and revenge denial.

The revenge loop binds all three roles: once rats exit they may return with weapons (the scientist nightmare scenario), Security flips to entrance denial, and scientists relocate after loud gunfire and let Security take first contact.

Per-role readings from the same community notes: Rats — 0–10 minutes is the best collective window to clear early stages before gun stability; 15–22 minutes sees pistols and rifles punish bad peeks while vest value rises (~+50 HP); from 25–30 minutes onward, traps and shotguns make greedy revenge travel painful. Security — win early with Net and Baton, do not AFK for the sniper once rats are on stage two, and after ~25 minutes place denial on return routes. Scientists — shorten experiment cycles as firearms come online, and treat minute sixty as a different game if OP mutations are active. All unlocks reset each session unless Forever gamepasses apply.

Which role should you start with

For a first pick, the fan wiki FAQ is direct: Lab Rat teaches the map fastest, Security is stronger once guns unlock, and Scientists shine if you care about the Mutation Index. Pick with intent — Lab Rats for the main escape-and-revenge fantasy (break containment, complete the three-stage escape, optionally return armed), Scientists for experiments, mutations, and Index completion, Security for patrol, capture, and shutting down revenge runs. Goal-dependent tier notes qualify this: Lab Rats often rank high for fun and escape goals but mid for pure PvP into geared Security, and Scientists rank high for science goals but mid for escape-style fun — no role is objectively best.

The practical path: play one full session on each role before spending Robux, then compare relative power on the community Roles Tier List after you have played each side once. A creator gameplay video shows all three roles played in turn ("we can try all of them"), so the choice is not permanent — though official game info does not document the role-selection menu or whether you can switch roles mid-session, so confirm how it works in-game.

Badges mapped to each role

The six-badge set mirrors the three-role fantasy: survive as a subject, break containment, leave the facility, advance science, catalog specimens, and lock down escapees. Rolimons-tracked stats (a September 2026 snapshot that shifts over time) map them to roles:

  • Test Subject — you entered the experiment life; any / early Lab Rat — 1,018,283 awards, 100.0% win rate
  • Through the Wall — containment breach progress; Lab Rats — 515,961 awards, 91.0%
  • Out of the Lab — full escape / exit clear; Lab Rats — 545,053 awards, 96.5%
  • For Science — experimentation milestone; Scientists — 266,943 awards, 49.0%
  • New Specimen — Index / specimen progress; Scientists — 320,358 awards, 60.8%
  • Caught One — successful capture; Security — 112,807 awards, 22.2%

Cross-role read: the escape badges (Through the Wall, Out of the Lab) show how far rats got — if they keep popping in your server, scientists should expect revenge soon. Caught One is by far the rarest role badge on the tracked stats, consistent with the documented capture difficulty: timer asymmetry, vest HP, and revenge travel.
